Occasion

The town of Löbau will host the 6^th State Garden festival. For the realization and post use of the regional garden festival and in order to acquire a wide spectrum of ideas and drafts, a European-wide scenery-architectural ideas and realization competition was offered as a reward.

Object

The object of the competition was the planning and formative treatment of the area for the upcoming garden festival in 2012. The competition was subdivided into an idea and realization part. The realization part (core part) encloses the creation of the surface area for the State Garden Festival up until 2012 as well as a lasting concept thereafter.

Subject of the idea part (supplementary section) are the adjacent areas that will in the course of the horticultural show be incorporated to the main area, as well as design and urban planning for its use afterwards.

 

Goal

Our goal is to permanently create green revitalizing areas in the town of Löbau and to make it more attractive for our inhabitants and visitors. A new public space will be created and former industrial locations will receive an ecological make-over.  At the same time new possibilities will be offered to the gardening organizations so they are able to present themselves to a wide audience during the year of the regional garden festival. Besides this, the topographical specific features of the area are to be taken into consideration.

 

Winning draft

One of our structural elements which will leave a lasting impression is the mountain and valley promenade; a centralized walkway through the northern and eastern planning area. By use of available roads a well planned connecting walkway between the Sugar plateau and the downtown district has been created. Along the way, all the different exhibition items are listed.

One of the dominating elements of the exhibit is the use and terra-forming of the former slurry tanks to imaginatively experience areas through the use of used materials, plants and differentiated water levels, all under the theme "sugar", like sugar cane or sugar level.

The plantations are arranged along the whole promenade in the form of long-stretched alternating flower beds, and in the valley areas as crystalline structures.

 

The draft continually stresses the line between our downtown – and the Sugar plateau -  and adjusts to the available topography. Costly interventions in the landscape and the watercourses are avoided.
