The Six Cities alliance

On the 21 August 1346 the cities of Bautzen, Görlitz, Zittau, Kamenz, Lauban and Löbau formed an alliance; the Six Cities alliance. This significantly influenced the history of the region for centuries. Löbau reached a central location with particular importance as the annual meetings (conventions) have been held here. In 1815, the anniversary of the Six Cities alliance as a result of the provisions of the Vienna Congress ended after which Görlitz and Lauban fell to Prussia and the other four cities remained in Saxony. For the 770-year anniversary of the city Löbau, on the 21st of June 1991, the federal government re-animated the alliance. The first Association of Cities meeting was held in the Convention Room of the City Hall, where once all meetings were held. Today this institution stands for joint initiatives mainly in the fields of art, culture, sports and tourism.

Places of interest

GusseisernThe King-Friedrich-August-Tower, which Löbau’s inhabitants usually refer to as the cast iron tower is regarded as one of the landmarks of the city. It was built in 1854 by the baker Friedrich August Bretschneider at the summit of Mount Löbau. It is 28m high and weighs about 70 Tonnes. Because of its cast iron construction of about a thousand single pieces it is considered unique in Europe. 1993/94 a complete renovation was done which included dismantling and the reconstruction of the tower.

SharounThe “Schminke” House or Scharoun Villa, another landmark of the city, was planned and built from 1930 to 1933 by Hans Scharoun for Fritz & Charlotte make-up artistry and is one of the most important works of classical modernism. Therefore, it is also the objective of field trips around the world and the subject of numerous publications. For professionally interested entities such as universities and colleges the villa can be rented for workshops, seminars and overnight visits.
